Later this year, France will introduce an eco-tax calculated per kilometre for non-toll roads. This environmental tax will apply to all trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes on all designated roads. The 15,000 kilometres of taxable road network includes both trunk roads and motorways not under concession (10,000 km) as well as departmental roads (5,000 km). Toll roads are not included as these are already subject to payment.
The tax will be implemented following a three-month trial period in Alsace. This trial period will determine the consequences of certain paid routes on the surrounding road network. The tax will be implemented country-wide in June, with some regions being exempt and others subject to a 25% discount. According to the AFITF, the eco-tax will affect some 600,000 French and 200,000 foreign trucks and raise roughly 1.2 billion euros per year. Back to overview
